Voting for Sports Personality of the Year

Voting will occur during the live broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Thursday, December 18.

The public can cast their votes online for the main award, with full instructions provided during the show.

How to vote for SPOTY 2025

Nominee Selection Process

An independent panel of 12 sports experts, led by BBC Director of Sport Alex Kay-Jelski, selects the nominees.

Nominees are chosen based on these criteria:

  • Achievements in UK sports on national and/or international levels;

  • Representation of the diversity of UK sports; and

  • Impact of the individual’s achievements beyond their sport.

Coaches and management are not eligible.

The panel reaches a consensus to create a shortlist. If consensus is not achieved, a vote is conducted. In case of a tie, the chair’s decision is final.

The panel may adjust criteria or shortlist numbers if a consensus is reached, ensuring changes align with the award’s spirit.
