Increased Security Measures for Halloween Weekend in Tempe
TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) – With Halloween landing on a Friday this year, the Valley is gearing up for a weekend filled with celebrations, prompting local law enforcement to bolster their presence.
Airbnb’s Role in Preventing Unruly Gatherings
Airbnb has implemented advanced technology to curb the organization of disruptive parties through its platform. Both Scottsdale and Tempe police departments are enhancing their security efforts in response.
“This year, our Tempe Police Department will receive support from other agencies to ensure we have adequate staffing and maintain community safety,” stated Lindsey Fernandez from Tempe Police. “Our goal is to stay proactive.”
In 2022, a Halloween gathering at a Tempe Airbnb turned violent with gunfire. Fortunately, there were no injuries.
Airbnb’s Global Policy Against Parties
Lauren Bouton, Airbnb’s Policy Lead for the Rocky Mountain Region, explained, “We have globally prohibited parties.” This policy, established five years ago, employs screening technology to deter party-related bookings throughout the year.
“As major events like Halloween approach, we activate our anti-party technology,” Bouton added. “Last year, we blocked 38,000 potential bookings nationwide during the Halloween weekend.”
The technology identifies potential risks by monitoring factors such as single-night stays, last-minute bookings, and the proximity of the booker to the rental location.
Violations of the party policy can lead to suspension or permanent removal from the platform for both hosts and guests.
