The meeting between Trump and Xi took place in Busan, South Korea, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, lasting approximately 100 minutes.
On his return to Washington, Trump shared with reporters aboard Air Force One that the meeting was “remarkable,” praising Xi Jinping as a “great leader of a very powerful, very strong country.”
Trump announced an immediate reduction in fentanyl-related tariffs on China from 20% to 10%, following Xi’s commitment to intensify efforts against the shipment of precursor chemicals used in synthetic opioids.
Additionally, Trump stated that China has agreed to delay its planned export controls on critical rare-earth metals for at least a year.
China has also committed to resuming the purchase of U.S. soybeans.
Chinese officials have yet to publicly comment on the meeting’s outcomes.
Future Developments
Trump announced plans to visit China in April next year, with Xi expected to make a reciprocal visit to the United States thereafter.
