US and China Engage in Productive Trade Discussions in Malaysia Before Trump-Xi Summit in South Korea

On Saturday, the United States and China conducted “very constructive” trade negotiations in Malaysia, setting the stage for a crucial meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in South Korea next week, according to a spokesperson from the US Treasury.
“Today’s discussions have wrapped up. They were highly productive, and we anticipate continuing them tomorrow morning,” the spokesperson mentioned, as reported by AFP.

As the globe’s two largest economies, the US and China aim to prevent further escalation in their trade conflict and ensure a pivotal meeting between their leaders. This high-stakes dialogue could address temporary relief on tariffs, technology restrictions, and China’s purchase of US soybeans.
These discussions, occurring alongside the ASEAN summit, are crucial as Trump has threatened to impose new 100% tariffs on Chinese imports starting November 1, in response to China’s expanded export controls on rare earth elements.
Additionally, both nations have begun imposing arrival fees on each other’s vessels, a move triggered by a US “Section 301” investigation that deemed China’s industry dominance unreasonable.
Previously, the US President expressed a desire to finalize a “favorable” agreement with China to conclude the trade war, despite earlier threats to cancel the meeting, which coincides with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit beginning October 31.
Meanwhile, Trump has embarked on his tour of Asia, outlining several key topics for discussion with the Chinese President.
He highlighted that issues affecting farmers, impacted by China’s halt on US soybean purchases, and the status of Taiwan, which China claims as its territory, would be on the agenda. Trump clarified he has no plans to visit Taiwan.
