New Leadership at Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce

With nearly 20 years of expertise in communications, digital marketing, media production, and business development, Valerie Lockhart has taken on the role of executive director at the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce. She began her tenure on October 6 and is already actively preparing for the chamber’s annual meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

Bringing a Fresh Perspective

Lockhart is eager to leverage her extensive background in communications and technology to benefit the chamber. “My aim is to ensure our members gain tangible value, whether through marketing assistance, educational programs, or innovative networking opportunities. I’m excited to visit businesses throughout Freeborn County to understand their specific needs,” she shared.

A New Chapter in Hartland

Having relocated to Hartland two and a half years ago from Minneapolis, Lockhart was seeking a change of pace. “The friendliness, tranquility, and natural beauty of this area captivated me,” she explained. Her experience in supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs made the chamber role a perfect match for her passions.

Extensive Experience and Vision

For the past 12 years, Lockhart has led the nonprofit MN Women in Tech and spent a decade with the MN Tech Network. She also teaches digital communications and AI courses at the University of Minnesota, equipping professionals to navigate the rapidly changing digital world. Fifteen years ago, she founded Ninja Media, a marketing firm dedicated to helping entrepreneurs and nonprofits share their stories through video, web, and social media.

Building Connections and Advocacy

In her new role, Lockhart is focused on enhancing member engagement and ensuring the chamber’s value aligns with members’ needs. “I’m thrilled to connect with people and understand their challenges. If there are unmet needs or advocacy opportunities, that’s where we can make a difference,” she stated. She also aims to keep businesses informed about evolving regulations, such as the upcoming Minnesota Paid Leave law effective in January.

New Team Members and Community Engagement

Joining Lockhart is Belinda Alkula, the new administrative assistant who moved to Albert Lea from Colorado last December. Having relocated 17 times in 27 years of marriage, Alkula emphasized the importance of joining the local chamber to quickly integrate into new communities. “It’s a privilege to support local businesses with my administrative skills,” she said.

The duo will formally introduce themselves at the chamber banquet on Tuesday night at Wedgewood Cove. “I believe in the power of local businesses,” Lockhart affirmed. “Our entrepreneurs and employers are the community’s heartbeat, and the chamber is here to champion their success.”
