Ty Cobb: Bolton’s Legal Case Stands Beyond Personal Grudges
Ty Cobb, a former attorney for the White House, emphasized that the legal proceedings against ex-national security adviser John Bolton are not merely acts of vengeance by the Trump administration. He asserted that the case possesses substantial legal grounds.
“This prosecution wouldn’t have proceeded solely due to [President] Trump’s vendetta, as the Biden administration opted not to pursue it, likely to protect sensitive intelligence methods related to Iran,” Cobb explained to CNN.
Despite Bolton’s claims of retaliation, Cobb maintained, “That’s clearly not the situation here.”
On Thursday, federal authorities charged Bolton with 18 counts concerning the retention and dissemination of national defense information.
Prosecutors accused Bolton of keeping sensitive defense-related documents at his residence after leaving the Trump administration in September 2019 and sharing over a thousand pages of “diary-like entries” with two family members.
Recently, the Justice Department also indicted former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Following his indictment, Bolton declared himself “the latest target” in a public statement.
“Dissent and debate are cornerstones of America’s constitutional framework, crucial to our liberty,” Bolton stated. “I am eager to defend my actions and reveal the misuse of power.”
He likened the Trump administration to Joseph Stalin’s regime, remarking that “Trump 2” mirrored the infamous quote from Stalin’s secret police chief: “Show me the man, and I’ll show you the crime.”
Cobb countered Bolton’s analogy, noting that his case is distinct from those of James and Comey due to the significant nature of the materials seized from Bolton’s home during an FBI raid in August.
“It’s no surprise that there’s a potential crime here,” Cobb remarked.
Cobb also mentioned that Trump’s personal animosity and derogatory remarks about Bolton might not aid his defense.
“Trump is aware of the impropriety,” Cobb said, referencing Trump’s comments criticizing Bolton post-indictment. He noted that Trump’s legal advisors and judges have “clearly stated he should refrain from such actions.”
“However, this won’t derail the legal process,” Cobb concluded. “It won’t be his saving grace.”
