North Carolina’s Economic Growth: Strategies and Challenges

DURHAM, N.C. – On Thursday, leaders from both the public and private sectors convened in Durham to explore strategies for sustaining North Carolina’s economic growth and investment appeal.

Driving Forces Behind Economic Expansion

“The influx of people and businesses into North Carolina has significantly boosted economic opportunities, particularly in major cities like Charlotte and Raleigh. Our state is also renowned for its robust university and community college systems, which consistently produce skilled talent,” stated Dr. Laura Ullrich, Director of Economic Research at Indeed.

Aligning Education with Future Job Markets

“We needed to synchronize current job demands with future opportunities. This required aligning our educational and workforce systems. Additionally, we had to enhance our business climate by improving our rankings in tax, liability, and regulatory environments. Infrastructure investment was another critical area, with over $10 billion allocated to transportation and supply chain networks over a decade,” explained Gary Salamido, President and CEO of the NC Chamber.

North Carolina: A Top Business Destination

According to CNBC, North Carolina is projected to be the leading state for business by 2025.

Sector Growth and Demographic Shifts

“The healthcare sector is experiencing the most significant growth, driven by population increases and demographic changes, particularly the aging population,” Ullrich noted. The life sciences, biotech, and advanced manufacturing sectors are also expanding.

A 2023 report from the Office of State Budget and Management forecasts a 50% increase in residents aged 65 and older by 2041.

Addressing Future Challenges

Despite successes, Salamido highlighted ongoing challenges. “We must ensure affordable access to childcare and housing. These strategic decisions require courage and commitment. Additionally, we need to lead in achieving zero-emission nuclear energy,” he said.

Rural Growth and Legislative Collaboration

While urban centers have traditionally attracted businesses, Ullrich pointed out that surrounding counties are now seeing growth. “Large manufacturing facilities are more likely to be built in rural areas like Lee, Johnson, and Chatham Counties, where land is available,” she explained.

Salamido emphasized the importance of working with state lawmakers to foster a business-friendly regulatory environment. He moderated a discussion with Senate President Phil Berger and Senator Dan Blue on fostering collaboration across political lines.

Impact of Federal Policies

Federal actions, such as tariffs, are affecting local businesses. “Tariffs on imported products strain American manufacturing,” said Phillip Fletcher, owner of Durham Bookcases & Other Cool Wood Stuff, who has operated in the same location for over 50 years.

Fletcher supports onshoring production, stating, “Regions that don’t pursue business or manufacturing will stagnate and fall behind.”

He emphasized the importance of adaptability and quality, saying, “Respond quickly to changes and maintain consistent quality.”
