Did PM Modi Miss a Strategic Moment by Skipping a Global Event?
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor raised questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to skip a significant international gathering. However, if Modi had been seen alongside Sharif with Trump acting as a mediator, it might have been Tharoor’s party expressing disapproval.
Imagining PM Modi participating in Trump’s peacemaking efforts between India and Pakistan seems unlikely.
Modi’s Decision to Skip Trump’s Event
Prime Minister Modi wisely chose to avoid Trump’s theatrical display in Egypt. The event resembled a comedic roast, with Trump as the sole performer, critiquing leaders during the Gaza peace agreement signing.
For instance, Trump humorously acknowledged France’s Emmanuel Macron, only to realize he wasn’t present on stage, prompting laughter from the audience.
Trump’s approach was reminiscent of a scripted comedy show, targeting nations with a mix of jest and critique.
The Role of Shehbaz Sharif
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif played a prominent role, seemingly following a prepared script. He praised Trump as a “man of peace” and even suggested a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for his efforts in averting a crisis between India and Pakistan.
Italy’s Giorgia Meloni and Britain’s Keir Starmer were present, with Meloni clapping along and Starmer maintaining a stoic demeanor.
Trump’s Focus on India-Pakistan Relations
Trump expressed optimism about India and Pakistan coexisting peacefully, putting Sharif in the spotlight. However, Sharif’s awkward response highlighted the tension, especially as his country faced internal turmoil.
Meanwhile, Pakistan blamed its instability on “Indian proxies,” while Taliban representatives engaged with Indian officials.
Modi’s Consistent Stance
PM Modi’s decision to avoid the event aligns with his previous actions, such as skipping a G7 summit in Canada and maintaining a diplomatic distance from Pakistan during the Asia Cup.
While some believe Modi missed a chance to influence global history, others argue that participating in Trump’s spectacle would have led to criticism from his political opponents.
