Andrea Clustka: A Journey of Resilience and Transformation
Andrea Clustka, a 2022 graduate in human development and family science, appeared to be a typical student when she transferred to the University from Western Nevada College in 2016. However, beneath the surface, she was grappling with a challenging relationship that spiraled into heroin and opioid addiction.
Finding Hope and Recovery
After facing several drug-related arrests and serving time, Clustka sought help at STEP2, a nonprofit treatment center in Reno dedicated to supporting women. Her goal was not only to recover but also to rediscover her voice and purpose.
Sharing Her Story to Inspire Others
Understanding that addiction can affect anyone, Clustka openly shares her experiences to help others. “Addiction has no specific face,” she emphasizes. “It’s important to talk about it because many are silently struggling.”
Academic and Professional Achievements
Recovery was a gradual process. “Healing my brain took years,” she recalls. By 2021, Clustka resumed her studies, earning her degree the following year. In 2023, she took on the role of program director for the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada, focusing on family violence prevention. She realized that further education could enhance her impact. “The MBA program aligned perfectly with my goals,” she noted.
Vision for the Future: Beyond Bars
Clustka envisioned creating a nonprofit to assist individuals transitioning from incarceration to meaningful lives. “Beyond Bars was conceived during my darkest times, in jail cells, where I questioned my life choices and sought a better path,” she explained.
Although she hadn’t planned to develop Beyond Bars during her MBA, the encouragement from faculty and peers helped her bring this vision to fruition.
A Testament to Resilience
Matt Westfield, an advisor at The College of Business, views Clustka’s journey as a powerful example of resilience. “Coming from a family with addiction issues, I understand the challenges. Her transformation showcases the strength and determination needed to overcome addiction,” Westfield remarked.
