Intense Airstrikes Impact Southern Lebanon

BEIRUT – In the early hours of Saturday, significant airstrikes by Israel struck southern Lebanon, resulting in one fatality and seven injuries, as reported by the Health Ministry. The attack temporarily obstructed a vital highway connecting Beirut to the southern regions.

Targeted Assault on Msayleh Village

The strikes concentrated on the village of Msayleh, specifically hitting a site with heavy machinery, leading to the destruction of multiple vehicles. A truck transporting vegetables was caught in the attack, causing one death and injuring another, according to Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV.

Casualty Details and Reactions

The Health Ministry identified the deceased as a Syrian national, with the injured including one Syrian and six Lebanese citizens, among them two women. The Israeli military stated the target was a storage area for equipment used in Hezbollah’s infrastructure activities.

Ongoing Tensions and Historical Context

Since the conclusion of the 14-month conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in late November, facilitated by a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes, resulting in several casualties. Israel accuses Hezbollah of rearming after significant losses during the conflict.

Calls for Sustainable Peace

Earlier this month, U.N. human rights chief Volker Türk urged renewed efforts to achieve lasting peace in Lebanon. By the end of September, 103 civilian deaths in Lebanon have been confirmed since the ceasefire.

Devastating Impact of the Conflict

The recent conflict between Israel and Hezbollah led to over 4,000 deaths in Lebanon, including many civilians, and caused approximately $11 billion in damages, according to the World Bank. In Israel, 127 people, including 80 soldiers, lost their lives.

Roots of the Conflict

The hostilities began when Hezbollah launched rockets across the border on October 8, 2023, following a deadly Hamas incursion into southern Israel, which ignited the Gaza conflict. Israel retaliated with shelling and airstrikes in Lebanon, escalating into a full-scale war by late September 2024.
