  • Meta postpones “Phoenix” mixed reality glasses to 2027 to ensure precision.
  • Internal discussions highlight the need for a refined and complete product.
  • Development continues on the next Quest headset and a device named “Malibu 2.”

Meta’s Vision for the Future

Meta has decided to delay the launch of its innovative mixed reality glasses, known as “Phoenix.” Initially set for a late 2026 release, the timeline has shifted to early 2027, as revealed in a memo by Maher Saba, VP of Reality Labs Foundation.

In another memo, metaverse leaders Gabriel Aul and Ryan Cairns emphasized the importance of taking additional time to perfect the product, stating, “We need more room to ensure every detail is right.”

Meta has not provided any public comments on this decision.

Design and Development Insights

The “Phoenix” glasses, resembling Apple’s Vision Pro, are designed with a goggle-like appearance and are powered by an external puck. This design choice aims to enhance comfort and prevent overheating, despite some initial skepticism.

Feedback from CEO Mark Zuckerberg has led to a focus on sustainability and quality, prompting teams to adjust their plans without adding extra features.

Upcoming Innovations

Meta is also preparing to launch a “limited edition” wearable, codenamed “Malibu 2,” in 2026. Additionally, work is underway on the next-generation Quest device, which promises significant advancements in immersive gaming and improved economic efficiency.

Organizational Changes and Future Directions

In a recent restructuring, Meta appointed Aul and Cairns to lead its metaverse initiatives. The company is also considering budget reductions of up to 30% in its Reality Labs division, potentially affecting the Horizon Worlds platform.

Expanding its AI capabilities, Meta has acquired Limitless, a startup specializing in AI-powered devices, marking a significant step in its hardware strategy.
